Local sister duo now offers coffee, walk-in service and larger group accommodations
For the past four years, The Denver Tea Room has not only been a dream turned reality for two sisters, but also a thriving business. To accommodate the needs of their ever-growing customer base while meeting local coffee demands, Margo Seymour and Arlene Guillen have moved to Denver’s revitalized South Broadway neighborhood.
After successful soft openings of the Tea Room and Coffee Salon at their new location at 1165 S. Broadway, The Denver Tea Room & Coffee Salon is proud to host their grand opening events on June 12 and 13.
Thursday, June 12 will be an exclusive, invitation-only evening for friends, family, clients, and media in the Tea Room, while Friday, June 13 will feature an all-day celebration for the public in the Coffee Salon from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees can sample Dazbog coffee, Almond Joy and Cupcake Chillers, bacon apple scones, crispy salads and freshly made sandwiches.
Since 2010, The Denver Tea Room had been tucked into the front room of a 19th century mansion-turned-bed and breakfast at 1820 E. Colfax Ave.
Opened by Seymour and joined by Guillen full-time in 2011, this intimate, 4-table establishment was known for hosting Holiday High Tea, small tea parties, showers, book clubs and gatherings in the style of tea tradition with delicious delicacies and beautiful presentations
Held back by a locked building prohibiting walk-ins, reservation-only service, measly parking, no handicap access, and turning away customers due to space constraints, Seymour and Guillen signed a lease in December 2013 on a custom build out that now features the following:
During the holiday season, The Denver Tea Room hosts Holiday High Tea, kicking off with the Sugar Plum Fairy Tea during Thanksgiving weekend, and including special Candle Light High Tea, which is hosted later in the evening for those who can’t make regular Tea Room hours.
Seymour says they have a wonderful referral relationship with The Brown Palace Hotel and once the Brown books up for Holiday High Tea, they refer overflow customers to The Denver Tea Room, which also sells out every year. The Denver Tea Room is already taking reservations for December 2014, which features a festive menu with three courses that change every year.
“Holiday High Tea is huge for the Tea Room and a big tradition for many families,” says Guillen. “For our fifth holiday season, we’re excited to have a larger space and hope not to turn anyone away, as in previous years.”
The Tea Room and Coffee Salon will each have unique menus. The Tea Room will provide seasonal savories (sandwiches), desserts and teas, while the Coffee Salon will feature local Dazbog Coffee, quicker to-go items, including scones, yogurts, breakfast burritos, pastries, and a lunch menu.
“We really wanted to use a local company, so Dazbog was an easy choice for us,” says Guillen. “Their product has strong name recognition, and in this day and age, coffee drinkers are sophisticated and want to know they’re going to get a great product. Also, I love the story behind Leonid and Anatoly Yuffa. They’re two brothers who started up the business, and given that Margo and I are sisters, it resonates with us.”
Both the Coffee Salon and Tea Room will provide gluten-free options. In the Tea Room, entirely gluten-free tea service will be available for a guest or party, including sandwiches and scones. In the Coffee Salon, several sandwiches, soups and salads will be gluten-free.
“Providing gluten-free food is more than just providing gluten-free ingredients,” says Seymour. “You also have to prevent cross-contamination in storage and preparation, and we have worked hard to create a system to meet those standards.”
The new location’s Coffee Salon emphasizes fresh, welcoming colors and a familiar atmosphere where customers can relax and enjoy their coffee, while the Tea Room creates a special ambiance, featuring British Colonial decorations in rooms closed off from the Coffee Salon.
“In our old location up until last year, we had a second room called The Viceroy Study,” says Guillen. “We had a few items from the room that have traveled with us to the new space, particularly, a round brass coffee table that belonged to our mother, who was from the Philippines. The table is extremely special to the two of us and the exotic vibe of the table lends itself to the environment.”
The Denver Tea Room received Westword’s 2011 Best Afternoon Tea award, and has been nominated every year for the Denver A-List’s Best Tea House.
